Red Velvet is a special set in many ways. My first main stage show that I had the pleasure of assistant designing, and my last show at LSU. The trickiest part in terms of paint treatments was the flats of the stage, which is supposed to be the back of the set (the play is kinda a play within a play). To achieve this look, we reversed painted the back side starting with the sponge detail, then adding the stone grout, then a scumble on top. We also added a spray texture to the front to add some more dimension. The wood was also painted to feel more old and like wood that’s been reused show to show.
